White plaster remains an industry mainstay. Homeowners and pool finish applicators have been using white plaster for decades. It remains a popular choice, despite the myriad of choices that have been introduced to the market in recent years, because of its’ affordability. White plaster is simply, a combination of white cement, white marble aggregate and water. It provides a relatively smooth finish and creates a water surface that sparkles with a brilliant and clean, light blue appearance, providing homeowners with that classic swimming pool look.
On the other hand, it has a relatively “soft” finish when compared to the other options. It is more susceptible to the effects of water chemistry than some of the newer innovative products. White plaster can change dramatically in appearance during the life of the product.
For those looking for an affordable alternative to white plaster, color plaster is a good option. Color plaster is available in a wide assortment of colors and is achieved by adding dye to the white plaster mix. Therefore, color may not be the precise shade that was anticipated, because variations in shade exist between sample chips and mixed plaster. Since color plaster is a variation of white plaster, it will only emphasize the characteristics found in white plaster. As a result, mottling and other imperfections can be more pronounced in color plaster than in white and with time, color plaster may even fade slightly.
Despite these drawbacks, plaster (especially white) remains the most affordable pool finish product on the market today and is a consistently reliable product when installed by a quality contractor and is properly maintained. Additionally, many of the possible pitfalls can be avoided, when additives called pozzolans are added to the plaster. These additives strengthen the plaster and make it less susceptible to chemicals.
